  • Prince William County Schools See Gains in Literacy and Attendance

    Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has reported improvements in student attendance and reading levels. Chronic absenteeism has dropped to 15.2%, down from 17.3% last year. Reading proficiency has also increased, with 60% of second graders now reading at or above grade level, compared to 36% in the fall. Early literacy assessments show fewer students at high risk of reading difficulties. PWCS continues to support students through tutoring and academic resources to ensure their success. (PWCS)

  • Barnes & Noble Continues Growth with New Gainesville Location

    Barnes & Noble will open a new bookstore in Gainesville, Virginia, on March 19, replacing a former Bed Bath & Beyond at The Shops at Stonewall. This marks the company’s 15th location in the D.C. area as part of a major nationwide expansion. Following years of closures, the bookseller has been rapidly opening new stores, including recent locations in Manassas, Georgetown, and Reston. With over 60 stores planned for 2025, the Gainesville store highlights the company's commitment to revitalizing brick-and-mortar book retail. (WTOP)

  • Volunteer for the 2025 Bluebell Festival at Merrimac Farm WMA

    The Bluebell Festival at Merrimac Farm WMA is set for Sunday, March 30, 2025, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help make the event a success. Hosted by the Prince William Conservation Alliance, the festival celebrates the annual bloom of Virginia bluebells with guided tours, nature walks, and educational activities. Volunteers can choose from a variety of roles, including set-up, parking assistance, trail guidance, tour announcing, guest welcoming, and clean-up. Shifts last between two to three hours, allowing participants to contribute without committing their entire day. The event takes place outdoors at Merrimac Farm WMA in Nokesville, Virginia, and is open to families.
